PMI and the first PMBOK publication
PMI formed as the project profession grew; an early body-of-knowledge document established common terminology and practice areas.
ASSURANCE DNA · PROJECT DELIVERY BODY OF KNOWLEDGE
PMI’s body of knowledge and project standard: principles, performance domains and adaptable practices for delivering value across different project contexts.
Which governance and delivery choices convert resources into accepted value under this project’s conditions?
PMBOK is not one mandatory lifecycle and is not identical to PMP certification. Tailoring is a governed decision, not permission to omit difficult controls. Source-bounded interpretation: no certification, protected text reproduction or award prediction.
LIVING EXPERIMENT · SYSTEM
Governance, scope, schedule, finance, stakeholders, resources and risk orbit value. A weak domain remains visible instead of disappearing into an average.
ORIGIN × EVOLUTION × CURRENT PRACTICE
Project, programme, portfolio and PMO communities across infrastructure, technology, professional services, public service and transformation.
01 · 1969–1987
PMI formed as the project profession grew; an early body-of-knowledge document established common terminology and practice areas.
02 · 1996–2017
Successive guides expanded structured process guidance across scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, risk and stakeholders.
03 · 2021
The guide moved towards principles, performance domains, tailoring and systems for value delivery.
04 · November 2025
The current edition retains the principle/domain foundation, clarifies six principles and seven domains and reintroduces evolved non-prescriptive process guidance.
PMBOK is a body of knowledge, not a single mandatory method. Tailoring must not be used to omit controls essential to the actual procurement.
OFFICIAL SOURCE FRESHNESS MONITOR
Monthly official-source reachability and change review.
The check records source reachability and a content fingerprint. It does not silently change the page or claim that an edition changed.
PUBLICLY DESCRIBABLE ANATOMY
These are navigational interpretations, not substitute clauses. Use the official publication for normative wording.
Treat the pursuit and delivery project as part of a value system, not a self-contained plan.
Apply holistic thinking, value focus, quality, accountable leadership, sustainability and empowered teams.
Design governance, oversight, decisions, assurance and escalation for the project context.
Make scope and schedule coherent through products, dependencies, estimates and change.
Align finance and resources to the delivery approach and value path.
Integrate stakeholder and risk work into decisions rather than parallel registers.
Tailor practices explicitly, measure outcomes and adapt through learning.
BEFORE × INTERVENTION × AFTER
A fictional bidder combines regulatory milestones, iterative digital releases and local deployment across 22 authorities.
A worked tailoring model, not PMI endorsement or delivery-performance evidence.
The bid calls the approach “hybrid” but overlays sprint language on a fixed master plan with no tailoring rationale or value feedback.
The team assigns governance by decision type, separates fixed outcomes from evolving features and integrates resources, risk and stakeholder evidence.
The proposed system states which practices are predictive or adaptive, why, who decides and how value evidence changes the roadmap.
